Green
Stuff
Why have I got none?
And why do I care?
It’s not that I need it
So why’s it not fair?
Why is it just
The preserve of a few?
And why is it not me
And why is it you?
Why should I work hard
for years and then die?
And why do I covet with green in my eye?
Why do I live in a house that’s too small,
With no formal garden, no grand entrance hall?
Where is the money that life owes to me?
It’s gone, cos I spent it, so you’re buying tea.
Ode to Sidney Spider
A spider is a stupid pet”, somebody said to me.
“It’s full of deadly poison and spends all it’s time asleep”.
“It’s got four pairs of hairy legs, two sets of beady eyes
And at the front two giant fangs they use for catching flies”.
But Sidney was a lovely pet despite what people said.
I hope that he is happy in the corner of God’s shed.
Poetry Writing
It’s only a matter of time
‘til I get this damn poem to rhyme
The intro goes well
And the middle is swell
But it seems to go wrong at the end
That’s all we need
A ripped pair of trousers,
A snag in your tights
A loud drunken party
that wakes you at night.
An unwelcome visitor
knocks on your door.
A dropped piece of china
that breaks on the floor.
Some soup down your front
or a pain in your back.
Or that heap of CDs
That was once in a stack.
Blocked in at a car park
Locked out in the rain.
That guy in the queue
before you who’s a pain.
But when these things happen
You say “That’s all we need”.
Some people are easily pleased.
